The time my boss was called “the girl” When I The time my boss was called “the girl”
When I started working as a development consultant in my very first municipality job (after years in the private sector), my boss was a woman.
She was smart. She was capable. She was beautiful.
And she was about the same age as me.
But she had a problem. A big one.
No one took her seriously.
At meetings with other directors, department heads, or politicians, the men would talk over her. They called her “the girl”. And they ignored her contributions completely.
It all came to a head during a meeting in the mayor’s office.
The minister himself was coming to open an event — an event that only happened because of the work my boss and I had done.
But at that meeting, we didn’t exist.
We were simply “the girls.”
I was furious. I didn’t say anything at the table, but when we walked out, I went straight to the director’s office and told him:
“This is not the way to treat my boss.”
Then I sat down with her and gave her three pieces of advice:
1️⃣ Always have a jacket ready to throw on over your blouse, and wear heels if needed — so you look them in the eyes instead of looking up at them.
2️⃣ Stand up when you speak in meetings. That way, they’re forced to look at you.
3️⃣ Slow down. Speak louder. Take up space.
She listened. She did it.
And it worked.
It makes me sad that she had to change her appearance and behavior just to be heard. But it also makes me proud that she did — and that I had the courage to speak up for her when no one else did.
Sometimes, small shifts in how we carry ourselves can be the difference between being overlooked and being heard.
👉 Have you ever had to change something about yourself just to get people to take you seriously?

The story of my mother-in-law and me… It didn’ The story of my mother-in-law and me…
It didn’t start well.
Actually, it was the kind of classic mother-in-law/daughter-in-law relationship you see in movies or comic strips.
On my very first birthday in the family, she gave me an ashtray.
I don’t smoke. Never have. Never will. And no one has ever smoked in my home — not back then and not now.
At Christmas, she gave me a coffee pot.
I didn’t drink coffee. In fact, it took more than 20 years before I had my very first cup.
I tried my best. I really did. Thoughtful gifts. Stopping by when she might need help. Being there at family gatherings. But for years, it just didn’t click.
Until I got pregnant.
This baby was the first grandchild on both sides of the family, so everyone was excited. Everyone but me, you might say — I was too busy studying medicine to care much about pregnancy books or birthing classes. (You know the ones: What to Expect When You’re Expecting, Your Pregnancy Week by Week, all the classics…)
But somehow, somewhere during those nine months, something shifted.
Maybe she realized that if she wanted her grandchild to be part of her life, she needed me in it too.
Or maybe it just took her five years to warm up to me. Who knows?
What I do know is this: from that point on, everything changed.
We ended up on genuinely good terms. She learned me so well she began giving the most thoughtful, amazing gifts. She told me things not even her sons knew.
And in many ways, our relationship became closer than the one I had with my own mother.
💡 Sometimes, the relationships that start with the hardest edges, end up being the most unexpected treasures.
Do you have someone in your life where things completely changed over time?

Which box would you put me in? Consultant? Coach? Which box would you put me in?
Consultant? Coach? Author? Mother?
Introvert? Extrovert? Survivor?
Too much? Too little? Too late?

In marketing, they tell you to find your “ideal avatar.”
To color neatly inside the lines so people know what to expect.
But survivors don’t fit in boxes — we burned them to the ground.

I’ve been told who I should speak to, what age group I should appeal to,
what kind of woman I should sound like.
But here’s the truth: my story isn’t demographic. It’s human.

Some of the people who find my words are CEOs.
Some are 20 and searching for direction.
Some are 70 and finally ready to live for themselves.
Different lives. One truth — we’ve all survived something.

And maybe that’s the real audience:
those who are done pretending to fit.
Those ready to rise — not as an algorithm, but as an original.

So I’m done choosing boxes.
I’ll simply keep sharing what I know,
what I’ve lived, and what I’ve built from the ashes.

You can buy in — or not.
But what you’ll always get from me is truth, beauty, and strength.
Because this isn’t marketing.
It’s my masterpiece in progress.
