From survival → masterpiece ✨

Before my master’s, I studied medicine. I was th Before my master’s, I studied medicine.
I was the first in my family to ever get a university education — and of course, I had to pick one of the hardest studies with the biggest curriculum.
But I didn’t have a doctor father or a lawyer mother to lean on. I didn’t have a family who could pay my way.
If I wanted this, I had to earn it. So I worked countless FaDL night shifts — because they paid the most.
I made it through. Not with the top grades, but enough to pass.
And then, one exam day, I realized something…
Normally, I never left the exam room. But this time, I really had to. And when I opened the bathroom door, I caught a fellow student — pants down, her whole body covered in notes and keywords she’d written on her skin.
“It’s what everyone does,” she said.
No. Everyone didn’t. At least not me.
And I noticed something: the ones with the highest grades often struggled the most the next semester. They couldn’t connect what they had “learned” before to the new curriculum. They had to relearn everything from scratch.
But I never did. Because I had actually learned it.
That was my survival strategy in academia: not privilege, not shortcuts, not cheating. Just grit.
And maybe that’s why, when bigger challenges came later in my academic career, I was ready to stand my ground.

And of course, I had to pick one of the toughest — medicine.
No one in my family was a doctor or a lawyer. I didn’t have a “study buddy” at home or free access to dad’s credit card.
If I wanted to make it through, I had to earn my own money.
That meant countless FaDL night shifts, because they paid the most.
I managed.
Not with top grades — but I passed. And I was proud of that.
But one exam changed the way I saw some of my fellow students forever.
I normally never left the room during written exams — I used every single minute. But this time, I really had to go.
When I opened the bathroom door, I caught a fellow student — pants down, her whole body covered in notes and keywords she’d written directly on her skin.
“It’s what everyone does,” she said.
Well. I didn’t. And I hope I wasn’t the only one.
Later, I noticed something interesting.
The ones with the “high grades” often struggled the most when the new semester began. They couldn’t connect what they’d “learned” before to the next part of the curriculum. They had to relearn the basics.
But I never did. Because I had really learned it.
That was my survival strategy: not shortcuts, not cheats, but grit.
👉 Have you ever discovered that someone “successful” only looked that way because they cheated the system?

Yesterday I shared the story about how I fought to Yesterday I shared the story about how I fought to stop our professor from weighing a nearly 200 kg participant on a cattle scale. I insisted on getting a proper medical scale instead — because humans are not livestock.
But that wasn’t the only battle I fought during that project.
And the next one became my breaking point.
When the data started coming in, we discovered that three participants had been hospitalized with severe side effects. They were close to dying.
The professor’s response?
“Just exclude those three. Then the results will look good, and the trial can move on to the next stage.”
I still remember the cold feeling in my stomach when he said it. As if human lives were just… inconvenient data points.
It wasn’t hard to see why he wanted to push it through. The company funding the project was a huge donor to the institute. And let’s just say the professor himself had financial interests in keeping them happy.
But I couldn’t do it.
I refused.
So those three participants stayed in the results.
The medicine was rejected.
And I walked away from academia.
Because if surviving in science meant silencing my honesty — then it wasn’t survival at all.
Sometimes survival means walking away.
